What is 316 Stainless Steel
What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
It is common to add alloys to steel to improve the desired properties. This stainless steel grade is marine, known as Type 316, is resistant to certain types of corrosion-prone environments.
There are many types of stainless steel 316. Some common types are L F, N, and H variations. Each one is distinct, and each has various purposes. L means 316L steel has more carbon than the 316.
312, 316, and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both exhibit better corrosion resistance and are more robust at high temperatures. They are also not able to be hardened through heat treatment. They are able to be easily shaped and stretched.
Difference between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
Steel 316L has less carbon content than the 316. But even with its higher carbon-content, 316L is very similar to 316 in virtually every way. Cost is the same, and both are tough as well as corrosion-resistant, making the two a great choice for extreme stress situations.
For projects that require a lot of welding may be a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more susceptible to corrosion from welding over those using 316L (corrosion at the seam). However, 316L can be annealed, allowing it to resist welding attenuation. The 316L is an extremely ideal stainless steel to use in high temperatures, high corrosion tasks which is why it's so popular in marine and construction.
Neither 316 nor 316L is the best option. The 304 is comparable to the 304L however the cost is less. This isn't as sturdy as the 317 or 317L that are more durable, with higher molybdenum contents and better total corrosion resistance.
